What was old is new again

This is another post about the naming of our second child. I discussed in a previous post about the discovery that Madeline (combined with its spelling variations) was in the Top 10 for baby names in 2008, and the unhappiness we felt as a result.

Unfortunately, Rose seems to be on the rise as well!

Heading into delivery, we planned to use the name “Elizabeth” again as a middle name if we had another girl. But after Maddie was born, none of the girl first names previously selected seemed to fit, and when we settled on the name Madelyn, we felt “Madelyn Elizabeth” was just too much of a mouthful.

Out of nowhere, I mentioned the name “Rose” for her middle name.

Literally, within minutes of finally naming our second child, our favorite nurse told us her daughter’s middle name was Rose, and my godmother told me that if my cousin ever has a girl, her middle name would be Rose. The younger sister of a friend of mine is due to deliver Julia Rose within the next two weeks. Both Hollywood couples Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck, and Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell JUST used the name Rose as one of the middle names of their daughters.

Instead of thinking of us as cutting edge and trendy with our names – since we’d rather stab our eyes out with forks than be either – I’d like to think that classic, traditional, old-fashioned names are on the comeback!
