in Life in General

Today was test day. I had blood drawn, an echo and a treadmill test. Before I give you the play-by-play, I’ll tell you that I did not see the doc today – in fact, she wasn’t even in the office – so it will be at least Monday before I hear anything.

With that being said, here was my day…

————————————————————————-

I was waiting to have my blood drawn (and eat the peanut butter crackers I had in my pocket) when an elderly couple walked in. The wife checked in and then both headed to a couple of arm chairs near me. After a few minutes the man turned to me and said, “You look way too young to be here, so that must mean you are here with someone else.”

Sigh.

They called me back and took my blood first. They told me it was the Boston Heart Lab test, and how it measures all sorts of genetic pre-disposition stuff for a variety of cardiac issues. It could take weeks for the lab test to come back, so I shouldn’t worry if I haven’t heard from them for a while.

After the blood draw, I sat back in the waiting room and ate my crackers and drank a Sprite. I had to fast for the blood work, and my appt. was at 10:15 am, so I hadn’t eaten since dinner yesterday night. I gobbled up my peanut butter crackers and gulped my Sprite, then waited for the next test.

The tech doing the echo called me back first. That took a really long time to complete, and when I asked, she told me she couldn’t say anything about what the test was or was not showing. It’s kind of crazy to see your heart pumping on the screen, I have to say. And there were a few times where they switched the sound on, and I swear I could hear the blood sloshing around!

The echo tech is originally from Chicago (North and Pulaski), but I could tell by her accent she has been living in the South for a while. :)

After the echo was the treadmill, and while the echo tech was mum about my test, the treadmill tech was one of those people who tells you her life story in the first 5 seconds of meeting her. Besides getting TMI about her life, she asked me if I knew my heart skips beats and then showed me the skipped beats on the screen. She said that a heart doing that is often a benign thing, so it might not be a big concern.

It turns out that a neighbor of mine is a nuclear tech at this office! When chatty treadmill tech started asking me about where I lived and what school we were zoned for, she figured out I live in the same neighborhood as the nuclear tech. She called the nuclear tech in while she was sticking and clipping wires to me (I would have preferred she wait until I was covered up with the gown). For those of you who have been reading since I started the blog, the nuclear tech was part of the “Red or Blue” post.

After all the tests were done and I headed out the door, I heard chatty treadmill tech tell the other 2 “She is so cute!” I think it is so rare to get someone of my age in there that I was like a breathe of fresh air for them!

So, it’s still a lot of waiting on my end. Hopefully Monday will bring some results.
