I live in the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock N Roll: Memphis, TN.
When you hear “Memphis”, you likely think of Beale Street and, of course, The King himself. But once you get passed all that, Memphis really has so much more to offer.
Namely, barbecue.
Really, really great barbecue.
Being a “Yankee” myself, I admit that I always used the term “barbecue” to mean cooking on the grill. And you Yankee readers tell me you’re any different!
Memphis hosts the World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest each May, as part of a bigger, month long celebration known as ”Memphis in May.” People in this area are very serious about their BBQ likes and dislikes.
Rendezvous or Corky’s? {Rendezvous, hands down!}
Wet or Dry Ribs? {Dry, please!}
Coleslaw on Your Pulled Pork? {That would be great!}
The BBQ competition is still to come, and I swear I will be able to smell that amazing, mouth-watering smell living 20 miles away.
Last weekend was the kick-off to this year’s festival. MusicFest is always the start of MIM, and this year’s line-up included music by Al Kapone, Blues Traveler, B52′s, Limp Bizkit, Colbie Caillat, Widespread Panic, Goo Goo Dolls and 3 Doors Down, to name a few.
And in keeping true to tradition, it rained.
Lots and lots of rain.
Widespread flooding.
Throw in a handful of tornado warnings for good measure, and you’ve got yourself Mud Fest instead of Music Fest.
If I were to give Memphis a “rainy season”, it would most definitely be May. This happens every.single.year, and the city loses oodles of money on it.
But, alas, you would lose the effect of alliteration if it was moved to a different month. Memphis in August just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
If you want to check out more about this month-long party, visit Memphis In May.

Memphis in August really doesn’t have the same ring. I read the title Memphis in May and immediately wanted to visit you.
Although…..you may have to convince me on this coleslaw/pulled pork deal…..

I am from KC, the Capital of the BBQ Kingdom. We call cooking on the grill, Grilling. BBQ is something completely different where I come from. It is the slow smoked meat smothered in that thick and spicy molasses BBQ sauce that really makes the BBQ. BTW, my son’s middle name is Memphis. Named after the City of The KING!
You know BBQ, then! I laugh at Northerns like me who “mis-used” the term BBQ when we actually meant to grill.
I love good bbq! Here we use the term “grill” for food simply cooked on the grill too. My dad makes some mean bbq ribs. SOOOOOOO good.
You know I loves me some bbq!! I’m going to have to come visit you next May and we’ll eat ourselves sick. And fat. And happy!!
On another note, I just realized I wasn’t a “follower” of yours! How is that possible? I read you everyday! Anyways, I am now. I also though you were on my blog roll. You were not. You are now

Liz,
I almost came down to this event, but decided not to due to the storms. I’ve sworn to visit at least once, but it would be just to say I did because I don’t eat the meat. I hear a great time was had despite the weather. You’re right – why wet and rainy May? I sure would have enjoyed the music performers. Excuse me, I’m having a few ’80′s flashbacks right now.
I’m a griller and not a BBQ’er.

I want BBQ now! I was in LA last week and someone told me about this hole in the wall BBQ place…. There was a small building, with a small door…. You walk in the door and a wave of BBQ smells hit you…. It was so hidden though…. I would have never found it if I wasn’t told about it….
