Parenting Firsts: Summer Camp

Last Tuesday was a day of firsts for me…

-I made and packed lunches for my girls.

pottery barn kids, lunch totes, backpacks

-I labeled belongings using Madelyn’s name.

-I dropped off both girls at their new summer camp.

-I had nearly 4 hours to myself…in my house…sans kids.

WHOA!

It was a very strange feeling.

All of the above seemed strange, really.

I spent the morning walking over to the monitors, thinking they must be asleep in their rooms.

How could my house be so quiet?

How could I be in my house and not have my kids around?

The truth of the matter is…we chose to put them both in a two-mornings-a-week-for-7-weeks-summer-camp.

Kate loves the activity and camaraderie, and would be bored all summer without it.  And Maddie…well…she just needs socialization in general.  That girl’s got a serious case of Diva-itis.  Or as we call it… Mad-ittude.

She wasted NO time showing her teachers her furrowed brow/puckered lips/chin to chest/fists on hips look on her first day.

She’s 22 months old, and thinks she’s all that.

Her teachers just laughed at her.  They’ve seen the likes of her before.

While the girls were gone at camp, I got to do things like pick up the toys… which – oddly enough - REMAINED picked up for more than 15 seconds since no one was around to undo what I did.

Craig and I may squeeze in a few lunch dates over the next few weeks, too.

As you can tell, this new found “freedom” has me living life on the edge.

Congratulations!!! It’s nice to have the house to yourself isn’t it. I love having my kids in the house with me but there is something to be said for that quiet time after the bus comes and hubby heads off to work. Even on my “work” days I get an hour to myself to regroup.

    Happy quiet time!!

Enjoy some “you time!” I always feel like I waste the time I get when it is just me, because I do stuff I should, like clean instead of something fun.

Signing up for summer activities is on my list today. Though it will not be 2x week for 7 weeks. I will try not to hold it against you.

Love this post. I remember the first time I dropped all my kids off anywhere LOL. It is good to get some “me time” though. I am going to look around your blog a little more. I am here from Lady Bloggers.

Funny…my daughter’s name is Madeline, too (I don’t mention it on my blog} and we always say she puts the Mad in Madeline :) I like Maditude, though!

enjoy the brief respite. It only gets easier from here!

    I think I’ve got mad-itude myself today.

(Don’t tell Maddie though. I do NOT want that girl mad at me.)

I am coveting those lunch boxes. For myself.

Enjoy the time to yourself! We are talking about hiring a sitter for a few hours a week, and I’m BESIDE myself with the thought of having a few hours a week to myself.

Me time… humm, by my calculations, that should happen in another couple of years – hopefully ;)
I can’t stand to see Owen get so big so fast, but at the same time, I’m looking forward to the summer camps and the labeling and all that fun stuff :)
    Have a great day…

Those first few hours to yourself are super strange. They get easier with time though. Lol. And I have a couple Maddy’s in my home too.

Enjoy your free time! Isn’t it nice to pick things up and feel like you accomplished something? Instead of feeling like the room you just cleaned got hit by a tornado? My daughter starts Camp at the YMCA next week… yeah! I get a few hours to myself next week!! ;) We all need a little “me” time!

I’m so excited for you! What a treat! I didn’t know they had camps for kids as young as Maddie. Cool! I need to find one for Drew.

    It’s a heady feeling, isn’t it?

careful…it’s VERY addicting and the treatment is being locked with your kids in a minivan for 9 hours with a barney CD playing.

So don’t go overboard, k? We don’t wanna have to do an intervention. ;)

Ha! I’m not quite there yet, but I’ve had the occasional moments with only one child and it is BLISS. I can only imagine what it’s like to be totally and completely alone in my house!!

Ha! Love Mad-itude. I have a feeling we’ll be using that term around our houe, too.

Ellie has the same backpack from PBK. Hers is the preschool size and it fits her perfectly!

Have fun during your time off!

Pace yourself on those lunches, honey! Those lunch bags are too cute there on the counter.

Strange to have a quiet house, isn’t it? Mine’s too quiet these days!

Okay, summer camp sounds exciting but I’m too excited about those lunch boxes to notice – I mean, how adorable are they?

    The answer: very, very adorable.

Lunch dates with your husband? How fun! I bet your kids are having a great time at camp. I’m debating sending my 3 year old to preschool next year. It would give me a few hours to myself a few times a week, but I’m not sure if he’s (ok , if I’m) ready. The girls totally were at 3, but he’s just a little slower socially.

    I love it, “Mad-ittude”

How wonderful for all of you! Enjoy every second. I wish I had the chance to do that. It will be a few years before mine are all old enough to be able to do something like that. I have to admit, I am a bit jealous. Isn’t it funny though, when you finally do have some alone time and you find yourself still listening for the kids? I hope you and your husband get to have some lunch dates! How fun!

Those first few times must feel so weird! Hopefully a few lunch dates will help ease the feeling :) It sounds like they’re having a great time, so you should too! Those lunch-bags are really cute btw!

You’re a wild woman! If you’re feeling really “edgy” you’ll have to try to squeeze in the carwash! lol
Enjoy your time alone! Adam is now on his second night with a friend and I’m really missing him. We’ve got to go home for a couple of days and the friend wants him to stay at the beach with him for a little while longer. I’m afraid he’ll be shaving by the time I see him again!

Oh..how fun for you!! 4 whole hours…delicious. Not sure what I would do with 4 hours 2 days a week.

And, oh, the pleasure of picking up toys and having them stay “picked up”!! Wow…what’s that like!! Tell me all about it so I can live vicariously through you!!

I remember when Emily started preschool, it was just so amazing all of the things I could get done in a 4 hour time frame. AND hit Starbucks too!

It was a nice little break and I was all refreshed to play again.

How wonderful! I think the lunch dates with the hubby sound great! Don’t forget to shower while they’re gone too. I’d love to take a shower or use the toilet even, without the elusive knock on the door. every. single. time. lol
Thanks for stopping by the other day. Blogging took a little bit of a back seat to motherhood and marriage these past few days, but I haven’t forgotten about you! Hope you’re having a great week.
