My 2nd Look Saturday post is really more like 50% a 2nd look and 50% a brand new update.

Back in late 2008 and before I was blogging publicly, I wrote a post on how I did a crappy job at hiding some of Kate’s Christmas presents.

***********************************************

I did some Christmas shopping a few days ago. Kate knew I had gone, and that had I brought home with me a large Toys R Us bag. I tried to think of a good spot to put it, and ended up laying it on its side in the bassinet part of the pack n play.

The pack n play is set up in our room, and if Kate were to just walk by it, she wouldn’t be able to see what was inside because she’s too short. BUT, when she is sitting on our bed – which she does everyday while I take a shower – she’s at a good vantage point to notice there is something in there…apparently.

One of the things I got her was a ride-able unicorn. You know those stuffed horse heads on a stick that a kid can pretend they are riding? Well, I saw one, but with a unicorn head. She has been talking about unicorns lately, so I thought she’d enjoy it.

Today, as I was finishing up my shower, she came running to the shower door asking for the broom. I had no idea what she was talking about, but then I realized she saw the stick part sticking out the top of the bag. I couldn’t NOT give it to her at that point, and figured this was my “mom lesson” to hide presents better in the future.

Here is a picture of Kate with her new toy. You can tell by her goofy grin how excited she is!

************************************************

So, the update to this story has to do with the current state of the beloved unicorn.

After nearly 2 years of hard play and good memories, I’m sorry to report the unicorn head was permanently separated from its stick body.  The damage is too great to be fixed, though keeping of the unicorn head has been heavily requested.

R.I.P. sweet unicorn

Too funny! Yeah, I was way too much of a snoop as kid to even think about stashing the little man’s gifts at home. Grandma better have a room cleared out for storage ;)

AHHHHAAAA – R.I.P. Sweet Unicorn!!??!! . . . You’re not right!!! But I love it!!! Really funny post, dear! I remember thinking that Santa’s hand writing looked so much like my Mom’s. And that Santa smelled alot like my Uncle Bill’s cigar. But I never found a Unicorn when I was younger. So cute!

OH poor unicorn!

BTW, they didn’t make those when I was a kid, but I had this amazing older cousin who could sew and she made me one. I cherished that thing for years.

Aww poor Unicorn :(

I have been trying to find such a toy, for ages now. My MIL has a cane, and my boys are always “riding” grandma’s cane. It’s funny and cute but the stores around here just don’t sell animals on a stick!

It never ends well when those heads separate from the sticks….we had a horse-head-on-a-stick that met the same fate. Being a bad mommy I couldn’t see keeping the head, since it made me feel like the Godfather had been in the playroom.

Decapitated Unicorn must be some kind of bad luck – isn’t it? I’d be careful if I were you. It might not be as bad as a broken mirror, but I’d bet it’s worse than walking under a ladder.

For some reason, my kids really haven’t looked for their gifts. We don’t hide them very well… But she looks so happy in that picture. How awesome is that. I love getting toys like that for me kids. And may the unicorn RIP

” The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not knew it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and underwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea. ”

Am I the only one singing The Last Unicorn over here?

May the head of the unicorn rest in peace, and the stick part not cause any permanent injury to anyone. I love the picture of Kate with the unicorn in his prime!

Oh my goodness. You’ve started Christmas shopping? I wish I could! I’d be giving them everything before they found it. Lol

That Unicorn had a good life!

And now I’ve got the Irish pub song about green alligators and long necked geese, humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees running around my brain….

RIP, I think not. He’s perhaps dismembered, but dead? Never. He’s a unicorn.

oops! You are not alone. about 8yrs ago? I had christmas gifts for the boys all tucked away in My oldest (then 3ish) room, and he was in time out. He opened the closet and started playing with them. It was too quiet and I could hear something singing? yep! every single toy! In the end we put them back in teh closet (it was October) and he didn’t catch on when they all showed up under the tree again.
Poor Unicorn. Maybe there’s a toy repair shop in town?

We have just the plain horse version. It’s name is Sally. I’m so sorry for the loss of your unicorn. He/she was way too young.

Aw that is so fun!! Those are the best toys – the ones that get played with & loved so much that they fall apart!!

At least she got a lot of good use out of it!

My son has a beloved Eeyore stuffed animal. Whenever he gets a little “gamey” we just replace him. We have two back-up Eeyores hidden away and have gone through about five or six. I’m not ready to break his heart and say that we have to throw one away, a new one just wouldn’t be the same!

That photo is priceless! So cute – I can feel the excitement! It is so sad when a toy meets its maker…or the trash.
