I had the radio tuned to the Christmas station when Kate and I were driving to her dance class last week. She was quietly listening to song after song when “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” came on. She didn’t make a peep during the song, but just as it finished and the DJ came back on, she asked, “Mommy, why did they say ‘there’s no such thing as Santa’? That’s not true, so why would anyone say that?!”
DOH!
I was in a pinch. There was no avoiding it! I took a deep breath and *kind of* answered her question.
“Kate, the song is about one of Santa’s reindeer stepping on the guy’s grandma, so it’s saying that Santa is real.”
“Why did the reindeer step on the guy’s grandma?”
This kid is too smart.
And is sure to always keep Mommy on her toes.
“Well, Kate, his grandma must have been outside snooping around. You need to be asleep for Santa to visit your house. She was probably trying to find Santa when the reindeer accidentally stepped on her.”
Times like this make me wish that hospitals offered a Parenting 101: Movies and Music from Your Youth that You Only Hazily Remember but Need to Avoid Letting Your Kids Watch/Listen to Until They are “Of Age” class, along with their child birth classes.
So, how did I do? Has a Santa-related question ever snuck up on you?

Oh boy… that was a sticky situation, but good quick thinking on your part! I SO dread the day.
