I didn’t intend to write my Blissdom recap post for today. Kristin Glas had told me to have a week’s worth of posts set to publish for the week following Blissdom. Like a good student, I followed her veteran lead, and had a different post set to go for today.
But as I sat here, rifling through the business cards I collected, flipping through the pages of notes I took, and singing along to Katy Perry’s “Firework”, I couldn’t help myself.
I wanted to write it now.
I needed to write it now.
In short, and in the immortal words of Scott Stratten, Blissdom was AWESOME.
I got to meet other bloggers, including (but not limited to) Mama_Rosebud, ErinMargolin, MS_WonderFriend, CrayonWrangler, DutchBeingMe, ByWordMusings, SippyCupMom, ShellThings, AnotherMomOf2, TheBlueZoo, BlueViolet, MollyInMinn, SellabitMum, MommyWords, MommyShorts, LawMomma, HeirToBlair, StilettoDiapers, RMcPhillips1, ARRRJ, ElaineA, HopefulLeigh, BirdontheStreet, NoFlashCards, MomTriedIt, WomanOnAJourney, AllFookedUp, BSiron, HollyHamann and LoriAnderson.
I also met AngryJulie.
(Meeting her was so epic, she deserved her own line.)
Obviously, when you get a bunch of women together, lots of hugs, laughs and wine are shared.
With unforgettable memories created.
Ask anyone who shoveled Red Lobster lobster rolls and Nestle heart-shaped sugar cookies down their gullets…while wearing Jockey ShapeWear.
Or was photographed with #FlatKate.
Or flashmobbed after Scott’s closing keynote (I did!).
Or saw KLZ and me cutting a rug at the pajama party.
Or hammed it up for the Freschetta photo booth.
There were many, MANY good times.
There were also many contacts made and lessons learned, as I’ve come away with new goals and plans, and a general sense of feeling re-focused and energized.
My take-away from the conference centered around a few things:
1. The importance of social media, using it effectively, using it for engagement and using it with focus.
2. Work to improve your content. Instead of spending gobs of time trying to promote yourself through every social media and social bookmarking site out there, spend time on your content. As Scott Stratten said, “If your content sucks, it sucks HARDER on social media!”
3. Numbers mean nothing. You can have 2 followers who are connected and engaged, and they will “do” more for you than 200 (or 2,000) who aren’t. You are never too small to reach out to “big” bloggers for a collaborative idea. You are never too small to reach out to brands you believe in.
There is no reason to wait on trying to achieve your goals.

There is a lot that could be said about insights gained at Blissdom, so if you have a specific question, shoot me an email (bellebeandog{at}gmail.com).
Overall, I would recommend it to any blogger considering going. I would tell anyone who is preparing for their first conference to be ready to network, and be ready to make your conference experience your own. You’ll be forgoing a huge perk of a conference if you don’t force yourself to mingle with the other attendees and sponsors. Also, you do need to be prepared to “work” a little while you are in the sessions. You will hear very experienced speakers who have walked the walked, but if you don’t take that next step and apply their stories to your blog, you’re missing out.
I’m very grateful for my Blissdom ’11 conference experience, and I’m honored to be part of this vibrant community, full of strong, intelligent women.
Feel free to link up your Blissdom recap post below!

Sounds like you are all fired up! Was this your first Blissdom? Can’t wait to hear via “you” all the great things I need to know. You’ll package it up all nicely for me once a week for the rest of the year? I’ll be all ears eyes, and soak it all up. But I won’t do it while wearing Jockey anything, nor will I be able to do a flashmob all alone. It just won’t be the same. But I’m here doing my best sponge impression… Hit me with your best shot… fire away. (name that song ; )

Besides being totally jealous, I’m very excited for you and at least this way I can live vicariously through you.
Great recap and it was WONDERFUL to finally meet you in person. I’m working on my recap post but don’t know when I’ll have it up because I’m moving to WordPress RIGHT NOW!!!
It sounds like it was wonderful. You got to hang with wonderful bloggers. I love them all.
It will be wonderful to see how you apply what you learn. You do so many things well.
YES! YES! YES! Must go forth and implement now. Did you see the Flashmob video from Sippycupmom? We are front and center. I have the link on my blog this am.
Miss you already!
Great recap. I still haven’t done my mammoth recap, but I posted one of my takeaways today, so I linked it.
Loved meeting you. You have excellent taste in shirts, by the way.
Your post is inspirational, I’m sure the conference was amazing!
Great recap. So fun to meet you! Loved your pj’s btw.
xoxo,t
If by “PJs”, you mean black yoga pants and a sweatshirt, then thanks!
Thanks for the link Liz. I took my advice too and have a week of posts too.
I think you are bang on right- you do need to make the experience your own, meet folks and apply what you learn.
I am so jealous you got to go but even more jealous that you met the Crayon Wrangler! Love her!
She’s even more amazing in person!
Look at you, already writing your recap. I was too tired to do anything but pics today, though my thoughts are much like yours. Fabulousness.
Haha! I’m glad that Katie made it to Blissdom

Sounds like it was a smashing time. To say that I’m only slightly jealous that you got to hob knob with all those people would be an understatement. Maybe one day when I grow up and is famous like you, I’ll be able to meet cool blog celebs too
Thanks for sharing this
Content content content!
My recap post isn’t going up until wed or thurs. You best keep this Linky open #murderface
Glad you had a blast. I’m sure the #blogonblogaction was hot!!!!
I’m jealous, sounds like a great time.
Y’all were working. It. Out. Awesome.
I was soooo happy that I got to watch Scott Stratten’s presentation on my phone on the way home from work. People must’ve thought I was nuts – sitting there jotting things down, laughing at nothing they could see/hear. I can only imagine how inspirational the entire event was if that was only one piece of it! Looking forward to reading everyone’s recap posts, and I’m so glad you had a good time!
Very cool!! I’m so glad you got to go! And a tiny bit jealous. Hopefully, I can glean some more knowledge from those that were lucky enough to go to Blissdom!
I’m so glad you had a fabulous time! I really hope to be able to go next year =)
So glad you guys had so much fun….next year, I’ll be right there with you!
Can’t wait to hear more about what you learned
Woot!!! I got my own line. It was a pleasure to meet you and your queso, of course! I’m only half done with the pictures…..
So glad you guys had an AWESOME time!
Can’t wait to hear more.
The juicy, the informative, the scandalous.
Yes, we want it all.
I’m glad you had a good time – I can’t wait to hear more. Maybe next year. But first…BlogHer. Are you going?
No, no BlogHer for me!
SO glad it was worthwhile! I’m also glad that those who attended are sharing the information and enthusiasm!
Envy envy envy envy envy envy envy.
That is all.
Great recap. And as you have been one of the people in the blog world I have probably read the longest, I have to say that meeting you and hanging out was a true high point.
I want to go to a blog conference SO BAD. Like, truly I feel like this blogging this is what I’m supposed to be doing and I’m not doing it to my full potential (and I don’t mean, “make a million bucks and quit my job” — I mean, doing as something to complete me as a woman, if that makes sense)….the stuff that I read about it is so amazing and looks like so much fun, but I’m scared to death. I hate to network…hate crowds…and am always scared to meet people face to face. Can’t wait to read more..maybe next time, I’ll be there, too.
Glad you had fun…can’t wait for you to share all your wisdom!
Great recap and take-aways, Liz! I’m so glad we met. If I’m ever in Memphis, I’ll let you know- and there’s a good chance I’ll come through at some point this next year as I try to get to know TN better. Did you hear about the blizzard coming Chicago’s way? I think we both made a good choice living here!
Ok, I was jealous before, but to know I missed out on a flashmob??? No way! So cool. Great tips, too.
And my claim to fame is I TALKED TO SOMEONE ON THEIR PHONE WHILE THEY WERE AT BLISSDOM.
So, I was kinda there, 6 degrees of separation style…
xoxo
I’m lovin’ this bloghop
I love that you called. I can’t tell you how much that means to me!
HA!
Just clicked on the dance video…
Oh, so worth watching.
Fergie better be skeeert….
Great summation and hey even for one morning and one cocktail party it was great! I know I will see you again soon!
Sounds like you had an amazing experience Liz! Thank you so much for sharing these stories and ideas. I really love the one about working on the content and keeping that the focus.
Can’t wait to hear more. BTW, love the video of you and KLZ getting down on the dance floor, how fun!
I am glad that we did actually get to meet, but sad that we did not get to spend any time together! Great job of recapping, and I love reading other attendees perspectives! We’ll all be busy for weeks!
Bernice
Yes! We all left with new ideas and inspiration! Now to find time to implement them all!
Thanks so much for the recap! I love reading them all today, but now I really am jealous I wasn’t there. Next one! Sounds like you learned some really valuable lessons.
I love #3, personally. Sometimes I feel like the new kid on the block and I’m always intimidated to contact some of the bigger blogger personalities. It’s good to know this is mostly in my head
I think #2 is my most important takeaway. I waste so much energy trying to promote things. Probably lessens people’s willingness to listen as well. Thanks for the shout-out and I look forward to seeing you at the next one!
Any post with an all-caps AWESOME is one I like
Glad you enjoyed Blissdom. I had an incredible time. Such a great audience.
It was a wonderful experience! I have a lot of processing to do and decisions to make now, and that’s a good thing. So glad we met, but next time…a little more chat!
It looks like you had so much fun (and obviously took a ton away from it as well)! Blogging is such a wonderful way for women to connect all over the country and realize that they’re part of a big community, all with similar struggles and triumphs. Do you have lots of changes in store for your blog based on what you learned?
It sounds like an amazing time and that you learned a lot. Maybe I’ll get to go next year:)
The dancing videos just might be my favorite video related to blogging. Ever. You set expectations very high for all those attending conferences in the future. No pressure though.
Dude, we’ve practically gone viral! You need to be on Twitter. Ask Surferwife!
Yay! It looks like you had a blast! I have to admit I am a little jealous…I would have loved to be there! Thanx for sharing your information!
Sounds like you had a blast! I so agree about content. I happen upon a blog every once in awhile with tons of followers but always wonder how the heck they got them with such boring material.
There are no other people I’d rather hear recap the event than you, KLZ and Flat Kate.
Oooh, you make me really want to take the plunge into conferences soon! I’m totally self-conscious about it, though. I’ll have to hit up my fave bloggers (like YOU!) to hold my hand for the first few minutes. Then I’ll promise to make it my own.
It sounds awesome!
Come to Type A! I’ll hold your hand!
I love that you had a positive experience and some take-away goals and ideas for your blog! I could see how it could all be so overwhelming, especially when reflecting back on it, and the messages and information could be lost in the shuffle.
And Flat Kate? She’s adorable!
I so wanted to go. I’m glad I hadn’t planned to as we were struggling with flu in my home. Maybe next year…
I’ve heard great things about Blissdom so I’m glad you had such a good time. LOVE that video of you dancing
Loved hearing about it and hearing all your updates on twitter! (oh how did I live without it…;)).
