The 10 Year Itch

My first big Whoa-it’s-been-a-decade-so-that-must-mean-I’m-getting-old moment of my life was this time last year, when I could officially say that it had been 10 years since I graduated from college.

To hear “10 year reunion” can be jarring.  By the time you hit your early 30′s, there really aren’t many events besides a high school or college graduation that you can count back to by decades.

This August will be another decade-long milestone for me as Craig and I will be married for 10 years.

So where does the “itch” part come in?

No, I’m not trying to trade in my leg-shaving, cake-baking, metro man of a husband.  But what I would love to trade in?  Is some of the gifts we received.

Ten years tends to be the age where things start to break or are just too worn out to continue using.

Before you tell me that your Aunt Louise had a set of pots and pans that lasted her 60 years, let me just say that most of what we received from our registry is still in good shape.  Yes, our everyday dishes have more chips than I’d like.  Sure, the non-stick cookie sheets aren’t exactly non-sticky anymore.  And who could forget the coffee pots, iron and set of knives that have moved on to greener pastures. But by and far, we are still using the same stuff we opened during the summer of 2001.

For better or worse.

Back when gift registries, cake filling flavors and honeymoon plans occupied every waking minute of our lives, teflon-coated cookware and plastic storage container packs were all the rage. Today, we’re worried about chemicals and cancer, and people have moved back to stainless steel and glass.

Brushed nickel was the “in” choice for home decor finishes, whereas now it’s antiqued bronze.

Heck, our wedding video was recorded on VHS tape and our photos were pre-digital!

I haven’t minded updating and upgrading our household stuffs when they’ve reached their life expectancy. Why, I happen to think our new Keurig looks smashing on our counter.

I guess I find the 10 year mark to be a time to reflect back on how life, times and trends have changed. And that thought naturally leads me to wonder what will be all the rage come our 20th anniversary.

Now if only I could find someone who would take the only-used-once fondue pot off our hands…

Congrats on 10 years! That’s awesome!

Todd & I had boxes of gifts sitting in our garage until last Christmas. Actually, we still have a knife set sitting in there. It’s the last gift we’ve not returned, used or given away!
