Our Mini Kitchen Remodel

We somewhat-remodeled our kitchen recently.

Nothing major in the sense that the layout remains unchanged, the appliances are still the same and the cabinets stayed put. But the changes were big enough to “pack a punch”.

Because we actually live in this house, I wasn’t going to pretend like our counters are always cleaned off and never have piles of coloring pages, markers or other kid paraphernalia strewn across them. So you’ll get the full effect with these pictures.

Our main goal was to take down the 2nd tier of our counters, which were bar stool height. It closed off the kitchen and wasn’t usable. So when we swapped out the formica counters for granite, we took down that higher counter level, and now have one continuous and much-more-functional counter area.

*I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the pressed tin backsplash. We ordered it from American Tin Ceilings and were very pleased. They give you the choice of dozens of colors and several pattern style, and were very affordably priced.

It looks fantastic, plus it appears to be more “usable” like you said and what’s better than a “usable” kitchen! It’s amazing that you changed that one piece and it actually looks like a brand new ROOM! I LOVE the tin back splash. And if your hubster did the work, that’s an added bonus! My hubs is very “handy” too so we saved a fortune in home remodeling, plus I can have it done EXACTLY the way I want and be as picky as I want too! ;-)

Thanks so much! And – yes – just that little portion of wall coming down changes the feel in the room so much. I’m crazy-happy with the pressed tin. Found it from a great place online that has oodles of colors and patterns to choose from.

What granite did you get? The pictures weren’t clear enough for me to identify (I can identify about 90% of all granites after 15 years of picking them out for other people’s homes!) I want granite in our place sooo bad, but can’t possibly afford it anytime soon.

I know. I really didn’t do the project justice with my lack of efforts put into taking the “after” pics. I’m going to take a photo just of the granite and email it to you. We’ll make this into a guessing game. :-)

I usually think of massive projects when I hear the word “remodel,” but these seemingly little touches made a HUGE difference. Hmmmm, I may have to make a trip to Lowe’s tonight.

You’ve reminded me that I started out our kitchen remodel wanting under-cabinet lighting. And I can totally see why you got so many questions about the backsplash – it’s so striking!

Under cabinet lighting? Now that’s just luxurious. I sit in envy.

Did I tell you how nice this looks? Because it looks super nice. I love the backsplash. Ours is like blue backsplash that looks like it came from a bathroom. and it probably did.

Wow – what a difference! I love the openness you have now! I also love the stools around the counters, so nice to think that you could have friends/family sitting there chatting while you cook… Dreamy.

That was a good move – it looks really nice. We just redid our kitchen last summer and it was such a relief.
