On Tuesday morning as I was walking out the door with both girls to take Kate to school, I made the horrific discovery that my wallet was not in my purse.
Nor in my coat pocket.
Nor in the car.
Since then, I have been thankfully reunited with my wallet, cash, license and credit cards due to a few kind, honest souls that I’ll forever be indebted to.
Losing my wallet – even temporarily – was pretty stressful, though there are 5 things that made it even worse.
- Losing your wallet when you have two kids who need to be driven all over creation for school, preschool, gymnastics and other related kid activities.
- Losing your wallet that holds cards for your business account on top of your personal accounts.
- Losing your wallet when it’s your oldest child’s Mom-brings-lunch-to-school-because-it’s-Tuesday-of-said-child’s-”Star Student”-week day and you have no way to bring anything outside of a boring ham sandwich from the your fridge.
- Knowing that the last time you can remember having your wallet was in a restaurant the night before. A restaurant that is only open for lunch and dinner, so there is no one around to answer your desperate phone calls at 7 am. Nor in 15 minute increments thereafter for the next 4 hours. (On a different note, I happen to think Mexican restaurants should explore the breakfast burrito market. Just saying…).
- Losing your wallet when your husband is out of the state for another 2 days, leaving you and your two children without any form of payment until his return.
Again, I’m so incredibly grateful for the person who found my wallet in the parking lot and for the restaurant employees who held onto it for me. But – damn – I would have been in quite the pickle if there wasn’t a happy ending to this tale.
Have you lost your wallet before? Were you happily reunited?

The worst evah – but must ask … how could you lose something so pretty and bright … Ian just bought me an iPad cover with the keyboard thingy in bright orange. Yes, its like dayglo. His logic, i would forget to pick up brown or black (he has little faith)
I know! It’s a Gussy! Who can lose something so big and ruffly?
I am so glad they turned it in. I have lost my whole purse before.
Oh my, so sorry this happened and so glad that there is a happy ending!
{Also? Opening to serve breakfast burritos- genius!}
I thought so, too.
I know my husband would be interested at least.
Oh I would’ve been panicked too. Thank goodness there are still some honest people out there.
Oh my gosh what a pain, I’m so glad you found it.
I’m so glad you got it back! That happened to me once at a movie with my sister. We went back just before they closed and the usher had put it behind the counter. Safe. I was so happy! It’s always a nice feeling to know there are still good people out there.
That photo of your wallet? Is wicked cute! I can see why you’d want it back. (that, and all your personal info and whatnot!)
I’m not going to answer that because I don’t want to jinx myself. I’d have a serious stroke.
Actually, once I lost my cell phone in a grocery store. Also Dick Clark stroke worthy moment.
Oh my – thank goodness for good old fashioned honesty!
I’ve left my wallet at a administrator’s office once in college when I was 18. Fortunately, I realized it within minutes – no harm, no foul.
Yeah, that initial gripping panic/fear you get the moment you realize it’s GONE gone? That sucks. And with your husband out of town, too? Yikes!
Glad you two (you and your wallet, that is) were reunited and it feels so good.
I’m kinda surprised how calm I stayed. And Kate was in tears because I had to pack a lunch for her at the last minute and wasn’t going to be able to bring her something special.
On Mondays, I leave work, go to the doctor to help with my crazies, then I stop by a bar for dinner before heading to symphony. It makes for a very long day, and I usually end the day exhausted.
However, it’s not uncommon for me to wake up, in a fit of panic, in the middle of the night, because I’m convinced that I left my debit card at the bar.
Not too too long ago, I couldn’t find my wallet (CJ had found it, and it was in his toy box) when I left for work, so I left without it. And then I got a phone call from someone in my band, and he needed me to cover accompaniment that evening . . . so I drove 60 miles, each way, to play with him. Only, I was nearly out of gas.
I scrounged up loose change in my truck (I’m actually really horrible when I pay with a $5 of leaving singles in my laptop bag . . . though it turned out well for me here) to pay for gas so that I could get home. And, once home, it took me about 45 minutes to find the wallet.
Since then, I’ve taken to leaving $50 in my glove-box . . . just in case. That’s a half-tank of gas and an emergency
bottle of winemeal.First of all, I love your wallet. I need a new one. I have been shoving my cards and such in a zipper pocket in my purse and am having a hard time keeping track of them. I don’t know what I would do if I lost my purse. My friend works in a doctor’s office and someone stole her purse right off of her desk. And she is 9 months pregnant. In the words of Stephanie Tanner, how rude!
It’s a Gussy! You should check her out!
Eek! I’ve not lost a wallet as an adult. I lost my whole purse, in a Sears, when I was 12. It was right after Christmas and my brand new (purple) Christmas purse was full of Christmas money. It was very devastating.
I’m so glad your wallet was found and returned to
You….intact.
I would have freaked out! Thankfully, I’ve never lost my wallet, but my husband left his debit card at a restaurant the day before he was going out of town. Not fun!
I have lost my wallet too many times to count.
Most of the time it was simply “misplaced” in a fit of mommy brain.
But once if someone honest had not found it LYING IN THE STREET and left a note on my front door, it would never have returned.
I blogged about it here: http://danceswithchaos.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/how-a-wallet-is-like-a-teenager-fridays-what-the-frak-moment/
So glad you found yours again!
Thank goodness for kind, honest souls!
Oh Liz.
You know me well enough by now to know the answer to this:
Yes. I’ve lost my wallet.
Many times.
I shouldn’t even have been allowed to have kids, I’m so careless.
And yet…
It’s one of the worst feelings in the world.
There are worse things, I know, but the phone calls, the hassles, the replacement…
Glad there’s a happy ending.
Ugh. What a nightmare.
I think the last time I lost my wallet I was single and it was at a bar. I didn’t have any one but my drunk butt to worry about!
Absolute awfulness. I had my wallet fall out of my purse at a movie theater. It lay there in the dark under the seats in the back row for a day and a half until somebody finally found it and turned it into the front desk. Aw.Ful.
I once left my wallet in the grocery cart. An honest person turned it in and the police brought it to my house all before I even realized it was gone!
I am so glad that you found it. I hate that feeling when your wallet/keys/phone are missing.
I just wanted you to know that I frantically looked in my purse right now, just to make sure.
Wow, if you managed to grab my wallet from that far away, I’d be seriously impressed.
Yes – lost mine once and it was TWO DAYS before I realized it was gone (boring story, so I’ll skip it), so once I discovered the loss it took a good, long think to remember where I had it last. Turns out, it was at the grocery store, where a kind soul found it in the parking lot and turned it in to customer service. Talk about feeling thankful and blessed. That could have been ugly if someone had two full days to use my credit card…
So glad your wallet was returned to you, too!
I would have FREAKED. Thank god there are still some good, honest people out there. Glad you were reunited with that adorable wallet!
I think I just had sympathetic panic for you–that’s such an awful discovery when it’s missing! Glad it turned out well for you in the end. Such a pretty wallet! We make breakfast quesadillsas at our house… c’mon over!
Oooh, what do you put in those breakfast quesadillas???
Ugh. Tried to delete that extra “s” in quesadillas, but it was too late!
Oh lord, I would have panicked!! My wallet has my whole stinkin life in it. Luckily it had a good ending!
I know! A wallet is worse than losing your phone, but a phone is definitely second on that list. Holy Hell if I had lost my entire purse that had BOTH!
I had a panic attack just reading this…if I actually lost my wallet I’d have to be committed. So glad you got it back!
I hate that feeling. glad it was returned.
I once left my purse on a metra train one morning and didn’t realize it until lunchtime. I called lost and found and they had it. Some angel saw it and gave it to a conductor. I had several minutes of panic while on hold with lost and found!
OMGoodness! On a Metra train? I feel like any type of public trans system greatly decreases the chance of a return. I bet you were sick while you were at work.
Oh i get all panicky when i realize i don’t have my wallet or debit card! But that wallet is seriously cute.
Oh thank goodness! I did lose my wallet once in NYC and it was mailed to me, but it took enough time that I had to start everything all over again.
I’ve lost my debit card before, and that caused me enough heart failure to always know its location. If I lost my wallet, I’d lose my mind and be in some sort of rehab facility. Glad to hear there are still honest people in the world!
Uh oh. We definitely don’t want you in rehab, Kallay!
Oh, that’s just awful
I’m so glad you got it back, but what a hassle for you.
So happy you got it back! I left mine in a McDonalld’s once and I got it back too! With everything inside. I was so surprised. But it was refreshing to know that most people really are good and only a few bad ones are messing things up for us!
I feel like this was my 1 and only 2nd chance. I’m sure the next time I won’t be so lucky.
That is the worst feeling. EVER. There is a crazy, long tale of my lost wallet when we were traveling the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Thankfully, that one has a happy ending too. Thanks for the memory..it’s a good story. Might have to blog about it one of these days. Glad it you were protected…
OMG!
What a scary thought!
So glad the person who found it was honest!
Oh my goodness, I’m so glad you found it!
